How to Read & Process Psychological Material
A lot of people pick up a self-help or psychological book...
Life can often feel a bit rigged as we traverse adulthood. We get this impression when we’re younger that we “should” be able to have a relatively good and successful life. Yet, there are an endless number of paths that we can venture down for career, relationships, family and so on. Most of us seem to feel that regardless of our choices , it “should” generally end up good and successful. Yet, we weren’t taught all that we needed to know about life. How many of us truly understand human psychology, the brain and how to go about answering the big questions and doubts that come along the way? Not many.
The term “development” is often used when we’re talking about growing and most of us make the mistake of thinking that development stops when we’re adults, around our early to mid-20’s. Yet, this is wrong. Our development never stops until we pass on because we’re always changing and growing. Any older adult knows that there are many phases and changes that happen in adulthood, and each comes with its own obstacles, complexities, pains and joys. It can be hard to keep track of it all, to figure out what we actually need to focus on or work to improve. That’s why it’s so important to get the support you need so that you can learn about you, about new skills, gain deeper insights and focus your efforts on the right things. We all have to start where we are and move from there.
Wakeful strongly emphasizes a collaborative therapist-client relationship where differences are capitalized upon. You’re the master of your life, and we want to contribute our knowledge, experience and perspectives so you can decide how you want to move forward. We’ll work to make sure we understand you, where you come from and what’s unique about your life. If you want more or less of something in therapy, speak up and we’ll adapt. If you need more treatment support in addition to therapy, we’ll give you a hand in finding intensive outpatient programs, psychiatrists, etc. Each of our Wakeful clinicians has a unique skill set and our team talks frequently to leverage our knowledge and experience. In this way, you’re not only supported by your individual psychotherapist but by all of us here at Wakeful.
Adulthood spans decades, and that means that the issues can vary significantly. Here’s a sampling of common one’s we’ve encountered:
